CHAPTER EIGHT

The next day, Courtney drummed her fingers on the steering wheel as she headed over to Dr. Moulton’s office. She’d gotten up that morning at her normal time, and she’d done her normal routine. After giving Peppa a chance to go outside, she showered and came out of the bathroom to the wonderful scent of coffee brewing. There was something almost luxurious about a simple thing like a coffee pot with a timer on it. After breakfast and getting ready, she moved through the typical morning traffic to work.

Through all of it, she hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Linda. Seeing her in real life when she showed up shortly after opening didn’t make things any easier. Courtney had done her best to get through the first part of the day until the vet appointment, but there were now more questions than answers. Why was Linda the bride in Tyler Lancaster’s wedding photo? And if her husband was already dead, as she’d claimed on her first day at the shelter, then why would she have shown up at Rose’s Gaming to kill Tyler? Was she having an affair, and she finally ended up killing both of them? Nobody had ever said how Linda’s husband had died, other than that it was sudden.

And then there was the question of whether Linda knew Courtney was a witness to the murder. That part bothered her the most, because she had no idea if her temporary coworker was now plotting a way to get rid of her, too.

In that sense, it was nice to have a chance to get away from the office—and from Linda—while she went to Dr. Moulton’s office. Courtney had to leave Peppa behind, but her dog was hanging out with Dora and making friends with a Bassett hound that’d come in for a bath.

Just as Courtney pulled into the parking lot, a massive white SUV swung in behind her and came to a hard halt just in front of the building. The windows were tinted too darkly for Courtney to tell if it was Mrs. McKenzie, and the car simply sat there running for a moment. It wasn’t until Courtney had gotten all the way up to the door that Mrs. McKenzie finally stepped out with Angus in her arms.

“Good morning,” Courtney said as she opened the door.

The middle of Mrs. McKenzie’s mouth pushed up toward her nose in a deep, frowny pout. Her large designer sunglasses were just as dark as the windows on her vehicle, so Courtney couldn’t see her eyes. She didn’t need to, because her voice said it all. “We’ll see about that,” she snapped.

The receptionist had them sit down to wait. Courtney positioned herself near a large tank full of tropical fish, but she couldn’t be diverted by the bright colors for long. She was now too worried about how this appointment would go. What if the vet did find something wrong with Angus? What if it was the shelter’s fault? She was
